A strong UConn contingent gathered at the Connecticut State Capitol this week to witness the historic swearing-in of Larry Pemberton, Jr., the first Native American elected to the Connecticut General Assembly.
Among those in attendance from the Department of Social and Critical Inquiry were Sandy Grande, professor and area director of Native American and Indigenous Studies, and Chris Newell, instructor-in-residence and director of UConn Native American Cultural Programs. They were joined by Andy Horowitz, associate professor of history and Connecticut State Historian, and alumnus Rodney Butler ’99 (BUS), chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
